Good Buddy lesson for the day:
When you do get signed on with a trucking company, and after your orientation ( which I'll cover later) you will be assigned a Dispatcher, aka driver manager, aka travel agent, aka lyin sack of shit.
Now, before I get ahead of myself I'll explain in short how a trucking company works. We will deal with just the trucking side, we all know that all companies have a safety department, payroll dept, benefits dept. but in the trucking industry you will also find the traffic side.
At every trucking company you will find a broker, a planner, a dispatcher. and a sales force.
The sales dept is in charge of getting the loads for the trucks the company has. A broker is a liaison for the company to help supplement either to much freight or not enough. Meaning? Well Let' s say your company has a contract with a big company to haul so many loads out of their plant a week, and for some reason you have more loads than trucks, your broker will find another trucking company to haul the freight you cant. The same goes if you have a truck that delivered to BFE and you don't have any sales freight in the area, then you will have to find a broker that has freight to get you back to where your company does have freight. How does all this work out when it comes to making money? Well You have a pie and cut it in several pieces so that everybody gets a slice, that's the simplest way to explain how it all works out on the making money side.
So Sales has found the loads, and they pass the load info to a group of workers called planners. They take this big ass puzzle of trucks, and loads and tries to make it fit. Once, they have planned all the trucks they send the load info to the dispatchers, or drivers managers.
Special Subject: Driver Managers, your personal assistant. The one, and only person you will deal with as a driver. If you have any problems, or questions this is who you call, just remember they go home at 5p.m. and don't work weekends, so ho's you are on your own till Monday.
Your D.M. is a very special mothafuka. Why? well the first requirement for the job is to be able to lie. Honey we aint talking about just any lie. We are talking about lying bold face, and straight up. If their lips are moving they are lying.
I'm not exaggerating either, this is a sob that will tell you that you are delivering a load to a nice quaint area just south of town, only to find out he has sent your ass to Baghdad for a Monday delivery. A D.M. always knows exactly where the load goes, and when it has to be there. The problem is they will lie to get you to take the load, then once you get it, just like Paul Harvey says "Now you know the rest of the Story".
If you need to be home on a Monday, Oh yea you gonna be there on Monday alright, it just aint gonna be the Monday you wanted.
So there you have your very own travel agent. Pack light Biatches.
Does anyone want to guess why I wasn't home this morning? Yes Honey I'm loading my pistole as we speak, cause honey Monday morning you can everyone go outside and look to the south for a huge mushroom cloud.
